Zadar is situated in northern Dalmatia and is the centre of the most indented part
of the Adriatic.
The old part lies on a well-protected peninsula around a natural port. Due to its3,000
year long history, the city can boast of an extremely rich cultural and historic
heritage. Zadar Archipelago has 300 islands and islets, and clean waters.
In its market, you will find fresh fruit and vegetables grown on the islands of
Ugljan and Pasman, and around Vransko Lake, as well as a large selection of fish,
molluscs and shells. Tourism started to develop in 1879 and nautical tourism is
also well developed.
The city is surrounded by the National Parks of Plitvice, Paklenica, Krka and Kornati,
and the Nature Parks of Velebit and Telascica. Sports include numerous tennis courts,
soccer, basketball, handball, sailing, windsurfing, rowing, diving and fishing.
The most famous cultural and entertainment events are traditional music evenings
in sv. Donat church, the Festival of New Theatre, Zadar Summer Theatre, various
painting exhibitions and the celebration of sv. Krsevan.
