Back
Fuerteventura is a beautiful island in the
Archipelago of the Canary Islands
(Isla Canarias). The Canaries Archipelago consist of seven
large and six smaller islands based in the Atlantic Ocean,
lying some 100km off the north west coast of Africa (Morocco
and Western Sahara) and about 1,100km from the Spanish mainland
(Cadiz). The Canary Islands are split into two Spanish provinces;
The westerly islands of Tenerife,
La Palma, Gomera
and Hierro from
the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (chief town Santa Cruz)
while the eastern islands of Gran
Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote
from the province of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (chief town
Las Palmas). Only a narrow channel separates Fuerteventura
and the African continent.
Fuerteventura has the oldest history and the longest beaches
of wonderful white sand of the Canary Islands, with a population
of only 30,000 and over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. Although
not as well known as some of the other islands in the Canaries,
Fuerteventura is a beautiful island with definitely some of
the best beaches in Europe.

The
capital, Puerto de Rosario is the oldest town of all
of the Archipelago. There are three main tourist resorts
on the island of Fuerteventura and they are:
Corralejo
is in the north and is a lively resort. The beaches
in the town are smaller and great for sunbathing but
if you want picturesque scenery or water sports then
Flag Beach is the place to go. It is popular with windsurfers
and kitesurfers. Flag Beach is just outside Corralejo
town, where there are plenty of restaurants and bars.

Jandia
in the south, where there are some of the best beaches on
the island, with over 20km of coast that has long stretches
of pure white fine sand, endless lagoons and dunes. With the
winds blowing all year round from the north west, it is a
windsurfing paradise, with the P.W.A. World Windsurfing speed
and slalom event taking place every year in August. There
are plenty of bar and restaurants around the resort.
Caleta
de Fuste
is in the east of the island close to the Airport. It is a
man-made resort, purposely built for tourists. Although still
lovely it hasn't got the charm that the rest of the island
has.

All over
Fuerteventura there are windmills that are being restored
to recreate the landscape of the working past of the island.
Fuerteventura has a lovely warm climate all year round, like
the other islands in the Canaries. At night during the winter
months it can get chilly with a cold wind but it is still
warm during the day with an average temperature through December
to February of 63 Fahrenheit and during the summer rising
to an average of 75 Fahrenheit and it rarely rains.
The
volcanic island of Lobos is close to Fuerteventura and
is approximately 6m2 in area. It is a perfect day trip
for walkers and nature lover and has lots of secluded
little beaches. There is a ferry from Corralejo harbour
to the island which takes about half an hour and runs
regularly throughout the day all year round.
Costa
Antigua
is located in the east of Fuerteventura close by to the
popular tourist resort of Caleta de Fuste. It is one of
the oldest villages in Fuerteventura and was the capitaly
of the island for one. |

Costa
Calma
is a popular tourist resort located in the South of the island
on the edge of the National Park in Jandia.
La Oliva is in the north of Fuerteventura.
Although not a well known tourist resort it is close to the
popular resort of Corralejo and worth a visit as it is rich
in historical and cultural background. Tefia
is a small village just outside the town of La Oliva is in the
north of Fuerteventura. There is an Eco Museum there, La Alcogida.
Tindaya is a small goat farming village and
a protected zone lying at the base of the Tindaya Mountain that
is 401 metres high. It is located in the north of Fuerteventura.
 |
Lajares
is a small village just outside of Corralejo in the north
of Fuerteventura. Although small a lot of locals live
here or are starting to move here as it has easy access
to Corralejo.
Horse Shoe Bay is a new development between
Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario in the north of Corralejo.
It is nly minutes from the airport and has the most spectacular
protected beaches. Villaverde
is a small rural village in the north of Fuerteventura.
Its surrounding hills used to be dotted with smallholdings
but with the growing wealth of people in the years that
has changed and now you can see that some of these have
been transformed into rather grander properties. |
Nuevo
Horizonte
is a small holiday resort situated along the east coast of Fuerteventura,
close by to the popular tourist resort of Caleta de Fuste. Originally
Nuevo Horizonte was built with the tourism industry in mind
and there are still new developments being built in the area.
Puerto
del Rosario
is the capital of Fuerteventura. It has been the capital of
this wonderful island since 1860 and is the oldest town of all
of the Archipelago. There are several great beaches close to
