Stara Zagora is situated in the central part
of Bulgaria and is one of the country's largest districts.
It occupies an area of 5152 sq. km, which constitutes 4.6%
of the area of Bulgaria. The territory and the population
of the region are organised into 11 municipalities and 205
populated areas, comprised of 10 cities, 188 villages and
7 hamlets.

One of the
region's biggest advantages is its geographic location and features.
This is mainly attributed to the intersection of first-class domestic
and international north-south and east-west transport links. In
the near future the “Maritsa” and “Thracia”
motor highways, which cross Stara Zagora district territory, will
be completed. The traffic along the two railway lines, which connect
the western part of Bulgaria with the Black Sea ports, and the southeast
part of Bulgaria with Turkey and Greece, is extremely intensive.
The region is characterised by large variety of
landscape, consisting of mountains, forests and plains. The composition
and character of soil varies considerably. The most common types
in the mountain terrains are cinnamon forest soils, while the vast
valley sites are mostly covered with dark brown and meadow soils.
The climate is trans-continental, while the winter is mild and warm.
The average annual temperatures are between 8-13 degrees, significantly
affected by the Mediterranean Sea, with average monthly rainfall
of 150-190 l. per sq.km.
