This beautiful
part of mainland Spain is probably Spain’s best kept secret
with the beautiful Mar Menor (little sea) a seawater lagoon divided
from the Mediterranean Sea by the La Manga Strip, a natural breakwater
that has progressively enclosed it. Almond trees, bright pink bougainvillea,
perfumed jasmine, orange and lemon groves, windmills and the constant
blue skyline add to the beauty of the landscape of this area. The
land is mainly flat and has been given over to agriculture, so offering
the most wonderful selection of fresh fruit and vegetables Spain can
offer.

Without
any waves and with very shallow waters, this makes the ideal
beach holiday or permanent living area in Spain, especially
for the elderly and/or families with children, as the beach
is so safe. The beach is protected from the open sea by the
La Manga strip, and so the waters are warm all year round, making
bathing possible even in winter months. There are wonderful
water sports facilities in this area and it is known locally
as the windsurfer’s paradise. The Mar Menor offers all
types of sporty entertainment including sailing, water skiing,
horse riding, paddle tennis, squash, bowling greens and not
forgetting golf, with three championship golf courses at the
La Manga Club and the exquisite restaurants, the famous are
also attracted to this area. |
The bay is famous for
visitors with rheumatic, arthritic and skin problems. There are
natural mud baths offering therapeutic results in comparison to
the Black Sea. The Mar Menor has a high iodine and salt content
providing a very therapeutic bath. The University of Murcia has
confirmed this information.
Los Alcazares is a thriving
town in the Mar Menor, and situated only three minutes drive from
San Javier (Murcia) airport. The coastline is unspoiled with scattered
villages such as Los Urrutias, Los Nietos, and Los Belones. Eventually
arriving at the onset of the 18km long “La Manga Strip”,
this is around 15 minutes drive south of Los Alcazares, you will
come across the lovely fishing port of Cabo de Palo with its breathtaking
headland and famous fish restaurants. There is a Sunday morning
market and little places along the harbour to sit and have a drink
and take a tapa (small covering snack before lunch) or a mouth-watering
paella and salad.
This area offers wonderful
harbours and marinas, and with these wonderful forms of entertainment
and leisure activities it is no wonder that this area attracts people
of all age groups and from all walks of life.
