Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean, is situated in the heart of the Western Mediterranean (at a distance of just 12km from Corsica, of 120km from Tuscany and 185km from the North African coast). Its 1,849km of coastline make of Sardinia one of the favourite destinations for Italians seaside holidays. However the discovery of tourism is relatively recent, started at the end of the 1950's, due its natural beauty and geographical position but also for its history. Sardinia has ancient and rich history: the first sure traces of human presence date back to the Lower Palaeolithic (100,000 BC).
